Woodland garden room

1 Logie Drive

After moving into their new house Dennis and Sheila turned their attention towards the garden and small woodland.

59 degrees north was approached to design and build a garden room which would compliment the new house and provide a sitooterie to enjoy the long Orkney summer evenings and stunning sunsets. The garden room is located at the end of the wee woodland looking west towards the Kirkwall harbour and hills beyond.

The site is located within the Kirkwall conservation area and was limited in size by the existing established trees, which are fairly rare and well respected in Orkney and the site boundary. To keep planning simple we opted to stay within permitted development which has restrictions on floor area and roof heights. The limited internal floor space was doubled by a timber deck , partially covered by a projecting roof and accessed by double glazed oak french doors. The building is clad in untreated larch and has a sloping wildflower roof which respect the natural context and will age well.

The garden room was a complete design and build project.
