Sam has worked with us on designs for our croft renovation and has also undertaken some preliminary building work at the site. We found that he genuinely listened to our ideas and was very willing to combine these with his own thoughts and expertise to produce an excellent, innovative design that we are really delighted with. We are also very pleased with the practical work that he and his colleagues have undertaken for us. He has shown a sensitivity to the history of the building and traditional methods, whilst taking practicalities and creative, modern ideas into consideration. We would highly recommend him.

We started by giving Sam some of our ideas and suggestions, interesting features such as a mezzanine, double sided log burning fire, open tread stair, cat-slide dormer windows (in keeping with some of the older buildings in the area) layout suitable for an older couple (possibility of ground floor living). low maintenance garden, no garage, economical air source heating system.

Sam produced some initial drawings in good time and we liked what we saw!

The final drawings (many in 3D ) were just what we wanted – a fairly traditional looking house in outward appearance with a modern (some would say ultra), airy, well lit interior. He had succeeded in creating some private areas in a very restricted site and introduced some large areas of glass which would allow plenty of light in the living areas and bring the garden into the home.

We can recommend Sam as someone who can take a project on from design to the construction phase whilst keeping the client involved with any changes or problems which may occur.

We are so pleased with the extention that Sam has designed for us. He has created a bright & spacious open-plan living space that has transformed the way that we live as a family - an ideal space for family dinners, entertaining and relaxing. And he has designed a beautiful, bright and airy master suite that is more than we could have hoped for. We can't recommend him enough.

It was important to us to find an architect who could understand the space we were trying to create, and design this in keeping with the existing building and surround; Sam really excelled with this. In addition to the design his ability to negotiate the planning and regulatory framework was invaluable and he built a great relationship with our contractor enabling the project to come in on and time and in budget.

I had the pleasure of working with Sam in the Stromness Townscape Heritage Initiative, a grant funded Project bringing regeneration through the built heritage. The specific project involved working alongside community groups, children and young people from toddlers through to Secondary school and liaising with other community interest groups. To see a new playhouse built in our local community centre garden in the style of a traditional Orkney house using authentic techniques and materials gave much more than a shelter, but a sense of community pride and a real thing of beauty. Sam was always reliable and bought much more to the project that the brief required, wanting to ensure that we were delivering the very best with as much meaningful participation as possible in all aspects of design. deliberation. planning and building.
