Pentland View

House renovation and extension

The existing stone built house with fine views over the Pentland Firth had character and quality but had fallen into disrepair. The house had been enlarged and extended over the years from a single storey croft to an extended 1 and a half storey house with stone outhouses built onto the east gable.

We were approached to work on a design to bring the old house to life again. The design strips away a poor quality block built porch to express the original well proportioned front elevation and concrete skews removed and replaced with stone skews as would have been found originally. Carefully designed dormers are to be added to improve first floor accommodation and were seen as part of the story of the evolution of the stone house.

The new extension adds a contemporary contrast to the traditional house providing an open plan space with good natural light and panoramic views over the Pentland Firth to the south.

The L-shaped plan formed by the extension provides a sheltered south-west facing garden space to enjoy the long Orkney summer evenings.

The stone to be taken down will be carefully reused in elements of the new extension including stone skews to the east gable and selected quoins wrapping around the corners.

Pentland View is currently at building warrant stage.
