Kirkwall

The new house sits in the former grounds of B-listed Daisybank House. The design respects the historic character of the area while achieving a light, modern spacious home. The traditional form and proportions of the public elevation to East Road are juxtaposed with south and west contemporary elevations.

The main house is expressed in a smooth render with annex clad in untreated larch.

The design process was carefully tailored to Dennis and Sheila's brief and enhanced the qualities of their site. The established trees within their garden, a fairly rare asset in Orkney, were addressed with a large first floor landscape window set above a double height open plan living room. A large corner window brings in south and west light and the building form creates a private, sheltered terrace to the south. There is a mezzanine from the master bedroom on the first floor with a glass balustrade which looks out of the landscape window onto the tree canopy.

Dennis and Sheila have had work done on the garden and we have now completed a compact garden room at the bottom of their wee woodland.
