59 degrees north

Halssund is a relatively new house with amazing views over the sea to the stunning island of Hoy. 59 degrees north was approached to design an extension to form storage and an integrated double garage, we were chosen to develop a creative solution which would compliment the existing house and create external space.

The design extends up the hill to form extra storage and a double garage and workshop. The proposals carefully considered the external space created by the extension to form a more attractive and sheltered entrance courtyard. The external space has also been designed as an outdoor eating and bbq area enjoying the great views and the evening sun.

The materials, timber clad walls and concrete tile roof, have been specified to match the existing house and unify the whole. The eaves have been detailed to run through from the existing house to new garage, considering the change in floor level which follows the contours of the site, keeping the building lines clean. A reclaimed flagstone entrance courtyard will be created and planting beds with native tree and shrubs to provide privacy and shelter.

The building warrant for the project is currently being processed with works to start on site in spring.
