Sam Green

Architecture and landcape designer

RIBA pt2, NPA masonry consevation

Sam completed his B/Arch and Dip. Arch at Edinburgh College of art in 2003.

Initially working as a Director in the family run business Green Ideas he managed a number of landscape and architectural projects from residential barn conversions to large scale parks including developing and gaining planning permission for the first UK football-golf course in the UK in 2007.

Following this Sam went on to work for Edinburgh City Council on a series of

projects to improve council housing stock and associated landscaped public

spaces. He then went on to work for Icosis Architects in Edinburgh on a number of residential projects.

In 2009 Sam moved to Orkney and started Green Landscapes in 2010, working on several design and build landscape projects. During this time Sam developed practical hard and soft landscaping and drystone walling skills. The company then evolved into 59 degrees north with more emphasis on architecture and larger landscape projects; in recent years he has designed and built natural play and community parks.

Growing his business network, Sam formed Phillips and Green Building Services in 2014, giving him further experience working on site to build domestic projects including garden rooms, small extensions, house renovations and new build houses.

Throughout his career he has gained a vast amount of practical building skills and knowledge by working on site; from pouring foundations and floor slabs, drainage, joinery work, stonework, various roofing techniques and internal finishing’s. He has focused particularly on stonework and created several stone sculptures within completed landscape projects. This experience has helped him to positively inform the design process with his understanding of the building process and the subsequent cost implications.

Sam works to achieve sustainable, contemporary design with an emphasis on natural materials which are crafted for each individual client and their site. He has a long term goal to make great architecture more affordable and accessible to all, within an ethically sound business model.

Sam has built up good working relationships with a number of construction professionals who collaborate on a project by project basis.

He has many personal interests including drawing, reading, sports but most of all spending time with his young family - especially in the great outdoors.
