6 Melvin Place
Stromness
6 Melvin place is a late 18th century B-listed town house located within the conservation area in the heart of the fishing town of Stromness. It has a Caithness slate roof, exposed roughly coursed rubble walls, sash and case windows and cast iron rainwater goods. The house has excellent character and an interesting history as the former home of John Renton, an early adventurer described as 'a real Robinson Crusoe' who was born here on 4th April 1848.
The fabric of the building has fallen into disrepair and 59 degrees north was approached to redesign the internal arrangement and plan the complete renovation of the building.
The client has a sensitive approach to the historic and traditional building techniques while wanting to bring the living accommodation up to current standards. The accommodation has been reorganised over the 3 floors with an open plan living space with several large rooflights created on the second floor. The original character of the house has been respected with stone party walls to be pointed with lime mortar and original alcoves and features exposed. Natural insulation and insulated lime render has been specified and approved by building control in a sensitive approach to restoring the fabric of the building.
All consents have been secured and works are now on site with the Caithness slate roof currently being stripped and re-instated.
